Dedicated to the memory of John Coker

This site is a tribute to John Coker, who was born in Weymouth on April 11, 1940. He is much loved and will always be remembered.

John was a private man, but he will be missed by many.  He played his own quiet part in many different ventures from the UK Navy nuclear missiles programme to the raising of the Mary Rose.  He loved steam trains and model railways.  He enjoyed walking and watching nature.  There are very few people who know all the things that he achieved during his 82 years on this planet.

He loved and was loved by his small family and was quietly proud of all that they have achieved.

Thanks to everyone who has supported the various fund-raisers that we have run in memory of my Dad who died in January as a result of cancer of the lower bowel.  We raised in excess of £2400 for: the RSPB; Cancer Research UK; the Swanage Railway Trust; and Prostate Cancer UK.  A significant additional pledge has been made to donate to a conservation project in his memory. This blog-post tells the story of the walking challenge that four of us took on in May – https://ecoworrier133969581.wordpress.com/2023/05/17/jurassic-reflections-2/

Thoughts

John and I worked together on nuclear history. He was so kind to me over many years, sharing his knowledge of missiles and submarines generously, patiently and cheerfully - I never once met him or spoke to him without hearing him laugh. He was a great presenter and teacher and always helped to make discussions and conferences fun as well as educational. He also worked devotedly hard to keep the Explosion museum going and deal with the complicated legacy of Roy Dommett's papers. I shall miss him a great deal, as will many other friends in the close-knit nuclear history community. My thoughts are with you Deirdre. With thanks, Richard Moore (King's College London/AWE).

A small selection of tributes from some of the people that he volunteered with at Explosion: “a very nice chap with a great sense of humour.” “a source of wisdom and knowledge for us all. He will be greatly missed.” “one of life’s gentlemen.” “one of the best.” “a lovely man and always happy to share his knowledge” “such a lovely man and greatly respected.” “a real gentleman ... His unsung knowledge and commitment to Naval History will be greatly missed.” “Though modest, John was great company with an infectious enthusiasm, an engaging optimism and a positive outlook on life.”

We met John several times over the years ... He was always cheerful and I know he had a lot of interests and expert knowledge (particularly birdwatching!) After he became ill, his quiet determination gave him a full life for as long as possible
